This song started with DJ Khalil, Aloe, Sam Barsh and I working out the music for the song. Aloe had an old Russian folk song that he liked which was the inspiration for the music and the structure. We messed around with different ideas and ended up with the verse section as a 5 bar phrase. After we had it worked out, I played bass to a click only. The song sounded triumphant so I was thinking about that when I tracked the bass. Since I was going first, what I played was going to establish the rhythm and I had nothing to interact with. Sam added keyboards and then after the initial session Khalil added strings, horns and choir to fill it out. The song ended being used in a Beats By Dre ad campaign so the first time I heard the finished version was on tv at a family Thanksgiving dinner. I was thankful for that. The song reached the top ten on the Billboard charts.
